Lab-Grown Diamonds and Natural Diamonds
Natural diamonds are mined from the earth’s crust, where the diamond crystal grew over 100 million years ago. Traditional diamond jewelry has always been made from diamonds mined from the earth.
Lab-grown diamonds, as their name implies, are “grown” in the laboratory, using a natural diamond seed crystal. The method of growing the rough lab diamond gemstone is via a process called CVD or HPHT. Lightbox utilizes the CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) process for nearly all of it’s lab-grown diamonds.
Both lab-grown and natural diamonds maintain the same carbon element properties. Lightbox’s lab-grown diamonds are grown to match the chemical properties of a natural diamond and the finished stone is optically identical. You will not be able to tell the difference between lab-grown and natural diamonds. Without proper testing equipment for trace elements in lab-grown diamonds or natural diamonds, most professional gemologist sand jewelers can not tell the difference either!
The Four C’s
You’ve likely heard of the Four C’s when it comes to diamond grading and quality. They stand for carat (weight), color, clarity and cut. Both types of diamonds, lab-grown and natural, abide by the very same parameters for the Four C’s.
An added bonus with lab-grown diamonds is that while natural diamonds might have color ranges from D – Z (white to yellowish), most lab-grown diamonds will fall in the DEF (colorless) or GHI (near colorless) color range.
In our opinion, the greatest feature of lab-grown diamonds is their cut. Almost every lab-grown diamond will feature an Excellent or Very Good cut rating. Which means your lab-grown diamond will be a sparkler, full of brilliance, fire and scintillation.
